I wasn't the worst in my high school Math class though numbers and figures were something that never took my interest.
Still don't understand much of the accounting jargons either.
Anyway, today Ranjith (our auditor) presented us with our financial results for the second year.
It is nothing much but we were so happy and a little proud of our little CDU enterprise. I've seen enough of these for other big companies but when it is your own signature which goes beneath it.
Wow! It feels wonderful!

The Internet is down
Oops! It only takes a day to realize that how much we missed it when the net goes down.
The SEA-ME-WE III Optic Fiber Cable which connects Sri Lanka (SLT) to the rest of the world has broken due to some Indian ship anchor accident.
We are sort of completely disconnected from the rest of the world.
Still worse all of our ISPs interconnet through US and Japan so even the local DNS lookups doesn't work well.
One good thing due to this scandal is (no ship was allowed to anchor there) I guess that our ISPs are now trying to set up DNS locally so that at least locally hosted domains will resolve locally. It shows when some domains outside SLT domain are now resolving like www.ccom.lk, www.lanka.net, my company's website and so on.
Still no www, no mails, no google means no life situation.
Authorities say it will take days before they repair it. Horrible.
NB: This is posted lately. Only today (26.08.04) we got some connection back.

Lockergnome
I've been reading this guy for years. Namely Chris Pirillo.
Once when I was alien to the net, hungry for information, trying to figure out things, looking for new ways, new tools for my work. He did speak to the occation. Soon I subscribed to his Windows Daily Nestletter. Had been a long way. The year was 1997 I guess.
Later he formed a company around it and now runs so many information distribution channels that I lost the count. Lockergnome had been a good resource for my knowledge starvation.
He kept sending me all the upto date IT stuff, trends, software, issues, technology, you name it, on daily basis for nothing. He still does.
So, if anyone, looking for information, you new wiz kids having the potential to be another Bill Gates, this is somewhere you can begin with. Go, give it a try. He's worth it.
Thanks Chris, thanks Lockergnome!

The Day After Tomorrow
It is nice to see that our theaters too now showing the latest movies simultaneously with their US counterparts. Good move because we always got perished our movie taste watching those crappy camera copies of must watch movies. When there is a hype nobody will wait years for them to come to the theaters but watch the very first copy they get. I wouldn't mind the DVD version but nothing beats the real theatrical experience. Glad now we got some chance.
Thanks Savoy, but you people have to clean up the air of the theater. Though I had a nice compay to compensate, it's SMELLY. eeyak!
The story is not that compelling (to me) but the flow of the movie and the topic is good. One or two times you can see the water is poured into a model but rest of the Digital Reality Creation was awesome, enormous and real. Best I have seen in years. I know some great creativity has gone into the movie. I would love to learn the tricks to make them too.
Make a note, this is a must see one!

Windows, ClearType and XP SP2
Everybody(?) is waiting till Microsoft releases this critical security update to their flagship product Windows XP.
I'v been using Windows since version 3.1 and I know it took many years for them to got their basic product right when they released Windows 2000 Pro.
Everybody was blaimig Gates and the company for everything but I think that is their success what everybody was envy at. None of my business though, I respect what they've done to the computer industry making them affordable and widespread. I couln't have afford my life if I were to rely on Mac OS and their nice but pricy hardware.
Honestly I do like Windows. Don't get me wrong (you Mac and other OS falks) it is the most flexible OS when it comes to the installed software base. They are aplenty, cheap, no frills and whistles but does what they supposed to do. I have used Apple Macintoshes for nearly 2.5 years but I got fed up finding the right software for my work. Period.
When Windows XP debuted with ClearType on it is the best thing that happened to the Windows world since the colour monitor. Granted that there were no security issues.
But Windows has always been the most common target for all those viruses, exploits, malware, spyware like malicious codes of evey kind.
I have given up using IE and switched to Opera long since and learned to keep my PC out of trouble but it still takes an awful lot of my time to keep it that way anyway.
If you are still using Windows 98 or Windows 2000. Then, with this service pack release, you are quickly running out of reasons not to upgrade. XP already offers improved memory management and stability over Win98. XP is inherently better for handling video, audio and photos, than either predecessor. Despite the bad press Microsoft gets on a regular basis, XP is more secure than previous versions of Windows, even before this release. XP SP2, tightens the security belt and offers an intuitively unified security experience. But I'd sold to XP long before for the simple reason of having ClearType.
So I hope this time Microsoft will make my life easier with this more of a security update to Windows XP as Service Pack 2 goes Gold from today.
Good Luck you Windows falks!

My Career
When I looked back at my career I see that they were mostly walked in interviews. I went in, my work did the talking and I guess I did market myself well enough so people did hire me.
The places I've been were awesome. Everything was a learning. Here's the list.
- Central Finance Co Ltd - (Financial Institute)
- Lanka Medical Imports - (Pharmaceutical firm )
- Arpico Group - (They make every household thing)
- Computer Island - (Computer firm)
- DataOne - (Infomation statistics firm)
- Advatage Sri Lanka - (Advertising firm)
- Web Syndicate - (Web development firm)
- Aqucomp -(Web development firm)
and currently - Interblocks Ltd - (Software development firm)
Wow! They were all wonderful places. So many lovey people I met. So here I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate all those people who helped me to be who I am. From Suminda to Patrik, from my uncle to the parents, the list is endless.
Thank You All!

Is Palm OS Going Obsolete?
Last month Palm Source got it's biggest blow in recent years when SONY anounced pulling off their CLIE handheld division.
I am hurt too because I initially jot down all there writings with my much loved SONY CLIE SJ33 handheld. SONY has made this device capable of competing with industry mammoths like Microsoft and HP single handedly while Palm Inc was sleeping.
And now they are out of the game. Palm devices too will soon be pushed into industry's niche place where Apple now resides compairing to Microsoft's Wintel group.
They still may have a few cards in their hands like Treo 600 and T3 line up. They are good products but late entries.
I love their OS. Instantly on, can leave where you stop, good battery life, never have to SAVE anything. Anyway without SONY I wouldn't buy another Palm device. Now I doubt if SONY will ever release a GSM Palm OS device since they got Symbian on their Sony Ericsson stake.
It all comes to a point most of Palm users like me will go for a Pocket PC or Symbian device in their next round of upgrade.
Hurt? Palm? Anyone?

CDU Enterprises
Sometimes it is strange how things work out. I initially never had an idea to run a biz venture.
Though I had an idea of running a web design firm I never wanted to do the marketing stuff by myself. So it never materialised. Evan though an occasional freelance work had brought me good cash I hated visiting the customer sites for presentations and stuff. Needed a realiable guy who could handle the operations for me but never found one. May be I never looked hard enough to find one.
It all changed when Upul came along. When he and Dilum wanted me to help in this venture a completely different trade though I had no reason to stay put.
Bingo! That's how our little CDU Enterprises came to exist back in 28 February 2002. It is still in it's infancy but we will turn things around.
So wish us some Good Luck!
